THE RED FORT

The Red fort or Lal Qila is located in old  Delhi. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 17th century. It is the most popular tourist destination in Delhi. People from India and abroad come to see this beautiful structure. This Qila is situated at the bank of river Yamuna. The name Red Fort or Lal Qila  is derived from its huge walls made up of red sandstone that characterize the eight sides of the fort. The construction of Red Fort is started in 1639 and was completed in 1648. The Red Fort is the residance of Mughal Emperor of India for nearly 200 years and every year on Independance day (15th august), the Prime Minister of India hoists national flag at the main gate of the fort and delivers a nationally broadcast speech from its ramparts.




There are two main entrances of Red Fort:
  • Delhi gate &
  • Lahori gate
Red Fort houses number of beautiful buildings like Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, Moti masjid & Pearl Mahal.

Diwan-i-Khas is made up of marble and it is a very beautiful hall and the main attraction of this hall is used to be the Peacock throne which was taken by Nadir Shah when he attacked India in 1739. This hall was used to grant private auidences.





Diwan-i-Am was the place where complaints of common people were entertained by the Emperor and the Emperor used to sit on marbled paneled aclove studded with gems.

The Rang Mahal which is also known as The Palace of Colors, holds a beautiful fountain with the shape of lotus and used to house the wives and mistresses of the Emperor.

By air:









Distance between Delhi airport and Red Fort is 19.8km. All international airlines fly through Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. You can take taxi from airport and reach Red Fort via Vandematram Marg or Mahatama Gandhi marg in 57mins.

By rail:

Distance from New Delhi station to Red fort is 4km and from old Delhi station to Red Fort is only 1km.

By Bus:

Buses from all major places are available from UP, MP, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajsthan to reach Delhi.

Facts:

  • Sound and light show is held every evening in the Red Fort.
  • The show lasts for about an hour.


Entry Details:

  • The Red Fort is open everyday except for Mondays from 06.00am to 06.00pm.
  • Entry fee for Indians is Rs.10 and for foreigners it is Rs.250.
  • Entry is free on Fridays.
  • Video camera fee is Rs.25.
